Hoa Lo Prison – the “Hanoi Hilton”, Hanoi, Vietnam

Photos of Hoa Lo Prison, also called the “Hanoi Hilton” where Vietnamese revolutionaries were kept, abused and tortured during the early part of the 20th century when France was ruling Vietnam. You can “experience” the suffering of Vietnamese imprisonments here, get familiar with some historical facts regarding Vietnamese wars and visit mysterious and sometimes shocking prison cells. The museum is very small but there are many separate rooms where you can see some war clothes and pottery exhibition, watch some short propaganda movies about how American pilots’ life looked like here when they were imprisoned and see some pictures of Vietnamese who suffered a lot or lost their lives being imprisoned. This place is definitely worth seeing.

How to get there

You can walk 10 minutes from the Old Quarter area as it is located right at the corner of Pho Ha Ba Trung, south of Hoan Kiem Lake on the lip of the French Quarter. The admission fee is VND20.000 (VND10.000 if you are a student), the museum is open from 8sm to 5pm withh a lunch break from 11.30 to 13.30 from Tuesday to Sunday (closed on Monday).
