PROS:
- This entire bag is actually two backpacks. The main bag has hidden shoulder straps that are tucked and zipped away when needed, and the smaller backpack attaches to the front via another zipper. When they are attached you would never know these are two backpacks in one.
- When detached, the main bag is small enough to be considered a carryon. I recently traveled and used the smaller backpack as my personal item, and the main bag as my carryon. Everything went smoothly and it fit perfectly in the overhead compartment (this was flying Southwest).
- I've had duffels partially open and rip when I've sent them through as a checked bag. This one had no issues! The main bags optional backpack straps tuck away and get zipped up perfectly, and the extra security buckles across the front held everything else in just fine. No rips or tears, and no socks and underwear spilling down the baggage claim (true story).
- Perfect for traveling in the city or a longer trip. When both sections of this bag are packed to the absolute brim, of course it's going to be a bit bulky. But, they still fit together and still were able to be carried on my back without any pain or awkwardness. There is a waist strap that wraps around you as well as a smaller buckle across your chest to really secure it all in there. At the top (by your shoulders) you also are given the option to tighten or loosen the overall fit of the back on your back (more or less how tight it is to your body).
- I was traveling from Colorado to New York via plane, then from there to Philly via bus, back to New York (bus), and finally home to Colorado. The versatility of this backpack made my travels SO much easier. I felt bad for my friend's and their bulky luggage who struggled to run around the city, climb stairs, or jump in taxi's as nimbly as I could.
- It has two handles that can be used when it's not in backpack-mode. One on the side, and one on the top. Both are cushioned and in great locations for lugging it in and out of overhead bins and trunks.
- Seriously. Buy this bag. Like, stop what you are doing, click "add to cart" and buy it. Yeah, it's a bit expensive (to me, at least), but I wont be needing a new one for a lonnnnnnnnnnng time. And when I do, I'm sure Osprey will have another fantastic option for me to choose from.
- The main compartment unzips like a suitcase (around the side) rather than straight down the middle (like a duffel) or from the top (like a backpack). This is perfect for travel because I don't need to dig around to reach things I need.
- I'd feel perfectly confident using this as a backpacking bag as well.
- Oh, and it's a Colorado brand :) I was basically a walking billboard for Colorado between this and my Chacos.
CONS:
- When the smaller backpack is completely stuffed, my Polar brand water bottle did not fit in the water bottle holders. I was disappointed, but my water bottles are all pretty massive. I have yet to try, but I think a normal sized plastic water bottle should be fine. I plan to get a carabiner and clip my water bottle onto the many strapys and doodads that are available on the bag.
- I'm not sure why, but I thought there was a zipper pocket on the waist strap of the main backpack. I was disappointed to find out I was wrong, but the little backpack has a nice front zipper and an internal pocket friend that is easily accessible. This was convenient for things like IDs and boarding passes as the zipper is pretty hidden (so I don't have to worry about people getting into my bag when Im not looking).
OVERALL:
I'm in love with this bag. Please buy it. Seriously, if you're disappointed I'll take full responsibility (but I promise you wont be).
First, this bag is very comfortable on your back so long as you pack it correctly and evenly, and it even breathes well to diminish sweating. It holds a TON of stuff, and again, it still fits in an overhead compartment in an airplane. The bag also zips up the straps, making it much easier to place in small storage areas. It has 2 large handles to hold it either vertically or horizontally. The zip-off day bag in front actually proved to be incredibly helpful, as you can leave your primary bag in the hotel and carry only necessary items in the smaller bag. Also, there is a small "misc" area on the day-bag that serves well for stray coins, headphones, etc.
The only improvement I could think of would be to add a few more smaller pockets for miscellaneous items such as sunglasses, travel umbrellas, etc. The day-bag ended up serving as a catch-all, so this isn't a complaint, just a suggestion. I highly recommend this bag for anyone considering tramping around for a few weeks. 10/10!
I flew out on TAP Portugal who would not let me take it as a carry on. When full it was a little large for their taste but the zip off day pack was key. I was able to dethatch it and keep all of my important items with me for the flight while I converted the main bag into luggage mode and sent it on its way. The zip on cover for the straps was important to me because I have in the past had luggage get snagged during transit. On one occasion it was a snowboard bag and almost the entire strap had been ripped from the bag. With the Farpoint’s cover, I was comfortable in knowing that I was in the clear.
Once I arrived in Europe, it took only seconds to reattach the day pack and be on my way. Over the course of my trip, the items that I accumulated filled this bag to bursting. I had to kneel on it to get it closed on my final day. I put a lot of stress on the zippers but they are heavy quality.
Pros:
Front panel access. You don’t realize how important this is until you lack it. My travel companions didn’t have it and watching them try to find something in their bag was a sight.
Osprey Packs Farpoint 55 Travel Backpack, Volcanic Grey, Medium/Large
Side carry handle. Was nice when you wanted to give the shoulders/hips a rest or just didn’t have the time or need to fully wear the bag.
Very comfortable. The bag sat perfectly on my hips and I was able to walk long distances with no discomfort.
Locking zippers. People have sticky fingers. Sure, they could always cut the bag but the large percentage of thieves are looking for the quick and discrete score. Being able to put a lock on both bags gave me good piece of mind.
Warranty. Osprey calls it the All Mighty Guarantee: Any Reason, Any Product, Any Era. This is huge. I beat the hell out of my bag(not intentionally) and it held up but knowing that it would be replaced free of charge if it ripped or a zipper burst puts the mind at ease. It also shows the faith that they put in their product.
Cons:
Color. Volcanic grey was my favorite of the available colors but I wasn’t in love with it. There should have been more color options. I’d have preferred a true black.
Size. It was BARELY too large to be used as my carry on. I always sleep easier on the plane when I have all of my stuff with me.
Outer net pockets. They were a touch small. When my bag was filled to the brim, especially during the end of the trip, there was very little that I could fit inside of them.

The Osprey Farpoint is possibly the best heavy duty backpack for its straps, design, centre of gravity being closer to your back (the 70 might be further away), plus having features like the 'day pack'. It lives up to its Hype, unlike the Fairview 70, regardless if you are male or female.
If you are a lady, you may actually find the Farpoint 55 much more comfortable than the Fairview range, despite the Fairview being technically a 'womens fit'. My wife said she will be happy to go backpacking again provided I buy her either a case on wheels, or a Farpoint 55.
